Sunscreen products are defined as all cosmetic products containing UV-filters, with the purpose of protecting the skin from the effects of harmful UV-radiation which can cause skin cancer. There are two types of UV-filters, organic (chemical; oxybenzone, octinoxate, cinnamates, camphor derivatives, octocrylene) and inorganic (mineral; titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and their nanoparticles). The main purpose of these filters is the same, namely to prevent harmful UVA and UVB radiation from penetrating the skin. Numerous studies have demonstrated the negative effects of chemical sunscreen compounds on humans and marine organisms. These compounds are released into the ocean when the sunscreen applied to the skin of swimmers is washed away, by urine excretion and waste water. The excessive use of sunscreen products and their accumulation in the environment leads to the destruction of marine flora and fauna, which manifests as hormone imbalance, abnormalities in embryonic development, reduced reproductive capacity and finally death of the species. There is specific evidence of these effects, including harmful influence on the development of embrio and larva of the sea urchin Paracentrotuts lividus, the bleaching of corals Stylophora pistillata and abnormal behaviour in the clown fish Amphiprion ocellaris.
