Abstract
Gen je temeljna fizička i funkcionalna jedinica nasljeđivanja, koja prenosi informaciju s generacije na generaciju. Geni djeluju na način da određuju strukturu proteina koji su odgovorni za funkcioniranje stanice na molekularnoj razini. Epigenetika je grana genetike koja se bavi promjenama u ekspresiji gena koje nisu uzrokovane promjenom DNA. U epigenetske mehanizme ubrajamo: metilaciju DNA, modifikaciju histona i mikro RNA. Na njih utječu okolišni faktori uključujući i prehranu. Modifikacija je dijelom nasljedna, a dijelom se formira tijekom cijelog života uključujući i prenatalni razvoj. Prehrambene komponente preko epigenetskih mehanizama mogu djelovati na čovjeka poboljšavajući njegovo zdravlje, a isto tako mogu biti i okidači za razne bolesti. Postoji uska veza između metabolizma, raznih upalnih stanja i imunološkog odgovora organizma. Stoga, važno je razumjeti povezanost prehrane i genoma. U budućnosti će nam to poslužiti za održavanje visoke kvalitete života i suzbijanje određenih bolesti.
Abstract (english)
A gene is a basic physical and functional unit of inheritance, which transmits information from generation to generation. Genes act to determine the structure of proteins that are responsible for the function of the cell at the molecular level. Epigenetics is a branch of genetics that deals with changes in gene expression that are not caused by a change in DNA. Epigenetic mechanisms include: DNA methylation, histone modification, and micro RNAs. They are influenced by environmental factors including diet. Modification is partly heritable and partly formed throughout life, including intrauterine development. Nutritional components through epigenetic mechanisms can act on a person by improving his or her health, as well as being triggers for various diseases. There is a tight link between metabolism and inflammation and immune system response. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationship between diet and the genome. In the future, this will serve us to maintain a high quality of life and to combat certain diseases.
