Abstract
Steroidni hormoni, koji se sintetiziraju iz kolesterola u endokrinim žlijezdama, ključni su za održavanje homeostaze u organizmu. Ovi hormoni, uključujući progestagene, glukokortikoide, mineralokortikoide, androgene i estrogene, reguliraju mnoge biološke procese. Djelovanje steroidnih hormona temelji se na sposobnosti ulaska u stanice i utjecanja na ekspresiju gena nakon vezanja na specifične receptore. Primjerice, aldosteron kontrolira ravnotežu natrija i kalija, dok kortizol regulira metabolizam i odgovor na stres. Estrogeni oblikuju ženske spolne karakteristike, a testosteron muške. Anabolički steroidi, derivati testosterona, povećavaju mišićnu masu, ali zloupotreba može uzrokovati ozbiljne nuspojave. U medicini se steroidi koriste za liječenje hormonskih poremećaja i drugih stanja. Važno je napomenuti da se uporaba steroida u medicinske svrhe treba kontrolirati, dok ilegalna uporaba može donijeti ozbiljne zdravstvene i pravne posljedice.
Abstract (english)
Steroid hormones, produced in endocrine glands from cholesterol, play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. These hormones, including progestogens, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens, regulate many biological processes. The action of steroid hormones is based on their ability to enter cells and influence gene expression by binding to specific receptors. For example, aldosterone controls the balance of sodium and potassium, while cortisol regulates metabolism and response to stress. Estrogens shape female sexual characteristics, and testosterone shapes the male ones. Anabolic steroids, derivatives of testosterone, increase muscle mass, but misuse can cause serious side effects. In medicine, steroids are used to treat hormonal disorders and other diseases. It is important to note that the use of steroids for medical purposes should be controlled, while illegal use can have serious health and legal consequences.
