Abstract
Photosynthesis is a reaction in which plants use carbon dioxide and water, with help of sunlight, to form sugar and oxygen. Primary production is the rate of assimilation of the carbon in photosynthesis. The biomass which takes part in this reaction is often expressed as the mass of the photosynthetic pigment - chlorophyll-a. Organisms in the ocean that are responsible for photosynthesis are phtyoplankton, which on the annual time scale control the same flux of carbon as the terrestrial plants. In this thesis we investigate fields of chlorophyll-a and primary production in the Adriatic Sea using satellite observations. The aim is to give the main characteristics of chlorophyll-a concentrations and primary production in the Adriatic Sea. The data are obtained from the European Space Agency Ocean Color Change Initiative programme and contain records in the period 1998-2019 for chlorophyll-a and 1998-2020 for primary production. Seasonal cycle for both quantities was calculated and displayed expected results. The linear correlation coefficient, with and without subtracted seasonal cycle, along with K-means clustering, was calculated in order to investigate spatial structures. The linear trend for primary production was found to be more pronounced than for chlorophyll-a. Principal component analysis for both variables displayed that the first few modes, oscillating mostly on the seasonal scale, separate the Po River region or the western coast from the rest of the Adriatic.

Reakcija fotosinteze može se opisati pomoću primarne proizvodnje koja predstavlja stopu asimilacije ugljika u fotosintezi te biomase koja sudjeluje u reakciji. Biomasa je najčešće izražena preko mase fotosintetskog pigmenta - klorifila-a. Jednostanični planktonski organizmi koji imaju sposobnost obavljanja fotosinteze nazivaju se fitoplankton i kontroliraju polovicu godišnjeg globalnog toka ugljika. U ovom radu analiziramo polja klorofila-a i primarne proizvodnje u Jadranu korištenjem satelitskih podataka. Cilj je odrediti glavne karakteristike koncentracije klorofila-a i primarne proizvodnje u Jadranu. Podatci korišteni u radu dobiveni su programom Europske svermirske agencije - Ocean Color Change Initiative. Podatci sadrže satelitska mjerenja u razdoblju 1998-2019 za klorofil-a i 1998-2020 za primarnu proizvodnju. Nakon teorijskog uvoda s matematičkom pozadinom u radu su predstavljenje metode obrade podataka. Izračunat je sezonski hod za obje varijable koji je kod klorofila-a pokazao očekivano povišene vrijednosti zimi dok su za primarnu proizvodnju dobivena dva maksimuma, jedan u proljeće i drugi u jesen. U svrhu analize prostornih struktura izračunat je linearni koeficijent korelacije u području oko rijeke Po, Južnojadranske kotline i Otrantskih vrata. Uz to, primjenjena je i metoda K-means klasteriranja podataka za grupiranje područja sa sličnom jačinom korelacije. Detektiran je pozitivan trend za primarnu proizvodnju dok kod klorofil-a izražen trend nije zapažen. Analiza glavnih komponenti primjenjena je na obje varijable pri cemu su dobiveni slični rezultati. Prvih nekoliko modova većinom su razdvojili područje oko rijeke Po i pojas uz zapadnu obalu od ostatka Jadrana.
