Abstract
Termiti (Isoptera) su zadružni kukci koji grade termitnjake. Unutar termitnjaka, kao i svi drugi kukci, termiti žive u organiziranim zajednicama. Te zajednice (kolonije) su podijeljene po funkciji, strukturi i ponašanju u grupe. Tri glavne grupe (kaste) su one reproduktivnih jedinki (kraljica i kralj) te sterilnih oblika (radnika i vojnika). Unutar kolonije, svaka kasta ima svoju ulogu, a međusobna komunikacija kemijskim ili mehaničkim signalima omogućava dobro funkcioniranje kolonije. Tijelo termita sastoji se od glave, prsa i zatka. Krila, koja su jednake dužine, imaju samo reproduktivne jedinke. Jedinke se među kastama razlikuju bojom i veličinom. Iako znaju napraviti veliku ekonomsku štetu, zbog svog načina prehrane termiti su iznimno važni za ekosustav jer probavljaju otpadne tvari.
Abstract (english)
Termites (Isoptera) are social insects that build termite mound. Within termite mound, like all other insects, they live in organized communities. These communities (colonies) are divided into groups by function, structure and behaviour. The three main groups (castes) are reproductive units (queen and king) and sterile forms (workers and soldiers). Within the colony, each caste has its own role. Mutual communication with chemical or mechanical signals allows them to function well in the colony. As for the external appearance, the body consists of the head, thorax and abdomen. The equal length wings are only found in reproductive individuals. Units among castes also differ in colour and size. Although they can do great economic damage, due to their diet, termites are extremely important to the ecosystem because they recycle waste materials.
