Abstract
Starenje je univerzalan proces kojega karakteriziraju promjene na molekulskoj razini kao posljedica oksidacijskog stresa i neuravnoteženosti neuroendokrinog sustava. Te promjene se odražavaju na fizički izgled i često vode razvoju uobičajenih bolesti kod osoba starije dobi. Smanjivanje razine estrogena i testosterona vodi smanjivanju koštane mase i osteoporozi, a također su isti odgovorni za smanjenje reproduktivne funkcije. Smanjen bazalni metabolizam kod starijih osoba, sjedilački način života i nezdrava prehrana vode povišenoj koncentraciji kolesterola u krvi i inzulinskoj rezistenciji što su ujedno glavni uzroci kardiovaskularnih bolesti i dijabetesa. Primarni cilj za znanstvenike je razumjeti kako promjene u načinu života, koje uključuju redovitu tjelesnu aktivnost i pravilnu prehranu, reguliraju proces starenja i održavaju homeostazu i zdravlje ljudskog organizma.
Abstract (english)
Aging is a universal process that is characterised by changes that occur at the molecular level due to oxidative stress and a disbalance of the neuroendocrine system. These changes reflect on the person's physical appereance and often lead to the development of common diseases among the elderly. Decreasing estrogen and testosteron levels lead to a decrease in bone mass and to osteoporosis, and are also responsible for a decreased reproductive function. Decline of basal metabolic rate among elderly, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy food lead to increased cholesterol levels in blood and to insulin resistence, which are the main causes of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The primary goal of scientists is to understand how changes in lifestyle, which involve regular physical activity and proper nutrition, regulate the aging process, maintain homeostasis and the health of the human organism.
