Abstract
Multipla skleroza je neizlječiva autoimuna bolest koja pogađa središnji živčani sustav. Od 1950-ih godina znanstvenici istraživanjima povezuju različite nutrijente s patogenezom bolesti, pokušavajući tako u namirnicama pronaći sredstva za usporavanje tijeka bolesti i ublažavanje simptoma. Budući da se bolest očituje razornim djelovanjem imunosnih stanica na mijelinsku ovojnicu, provedena su brojna ispitivanja djelovanja prehranom unesenih masnih kiselina na zdravlje pacijenata. Potvrđen je negativan utjecaj zasićenih i trans-masnih kiselina na razvoj i tijek bolesti. Rezultati istraživanja o učinku nadopune nezasićenih masnih kiselina su podijeljeni. Zasad je sa sigurnošću jedino dokazana pozitivna uloga vitamina D u prevenciji i napredovanju multiple skleroze. Nadopuna nutrijentima se nikako ne bi trebala provoditi kao zasebna terapija, već kao potpora djelovanju lijekova. Kako ovo područje znanosti zahtijeva daljnja ispitivanja, pacijenti nikako ne bi trebali koristiti nutritivne suplemente bez prethodnog savjetovanja s liječnikom i nutricionistom.
Abstract (english)
Multiple sclerosis is an incurable, autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Since 1950’s, scientists have been establishing connections between nutrients and the pathogenesis of the disease, in order to find among food components a remedy for the reduction of the symptoms and the progression of multiple sclerosis. Considering that the disease is manifested by a destructive effect that immune cells express towards myelin, numerous studies have tried to establish the correlation between the intake of fatty acids and patients’ health. A negative influence of saturated and trans-fatty acids has been confirmed. Meanwhile, studies on the possible benefit from supplementation with unsaturated fatty acids have had variable outcomes. Until now, the positive effect of vitamin D on disease prevention and progression is the only one proven with certainty. Supplementation with nutrients should not be conducted as the only therapy, but as a support to drug treatments. As this area of research requires further testing, patients should not use dietary supplements without prior consultation with the physician and nutritionist.
