Abstract
Kolesterol je sterol otkriven u žučnim kamencima i izgrađen od četiriju ugljikovodičnih prstena, na jednom kraju povezana hidroksilna skupina, a na drugom ugljikovodični lanac. Neophodni je sastojak staničnih membrana, netopljiv u vodi te utječe na fluidnost membrana. Preteča je kortikosteroida, spolnih hormona, žučnih kiselina i vitamina D. U organizmu se prenosi lipoproteinima. Glavni je uzročnik ateroskleroze i obiteljske hiperkolesterolemije. Kao prevencija nastanka tih bolesti predlaže se mediteranska prehrana koja ne preporučuje konzumaciju hrane sa visokim udjelom zasićenih masnih kiselina, trans mastima, industrijski prerađene i pržene hrane te alkoholnih pića.
Abstract (english)
Cholesterol is a sterol found in gallstones and made up of four hydrocarbon rings, a hydroxyl group connected at one end and a hydrocarbon chain at the other. It is a necessary component of cell membranes, insoluble in water and affects the fluidity of membranes. It is a precursor of corticosteroids, sex hormones, bile acids and vitamin D. It is transmitted by lipoproteins in the body. It is a major cause of atherosclerosis and familial hypercholesterolemia. As a prevention of these diseases, the Mediterranean diet is proposed, which does not recommend the consumption of foods with a high content of saturated fatty acids, trans fats, industrially processed and fried foods and alcoholic beverages.
